Brave Space Principles

Stay Safe Y'all is a deliberately cultivated "brave space," -- a space that works to make everyone, especially people who experience identity-based marginalization, feel safe enough to speak openly and freely about their experiences. Please reference this PDF (link) for more details.

💡 In this brave space, the safety of people with violently targeted identities will be prioritized and their voices amplified. This includes, but is not limited to Black and Indigenous people, Queer and Trans* people, and Disabled people.

💡 Language and behaviors that contribute to the oppression of targeted and marginalized groups will not be tolerated. Participants violating the elements of Brave Spaces will be removed from the meeting.

Here are some brave space principles, first shared by Brian Arao and Kristi Clemens in 2013 and reshared by Diana Ali (pulled from the PDF linked above):

  • Controversy with civility,” where varying opinions are accepted

  • Owning intentions and impacts,” in which students acknowledge and discuss instances where a dialogue has affected the emotional well-being of another person

  • Challenge by choice,” where students have an option to step in and out of challenging conversations

  • Respect,” where students show respect for one another’s basic personhood

  • No attacks,” where students agree not to intentionally inflict harm on one another

More details will be discussed in the course Intro Video.

Additionally, using the intake form, enrolled students will have the opportunity to add community agreements they do not feel are adequately represented by the Brave Space Agreements listed here.
